第8回 虹の橋

私の手の届かないところへ行ってしまった愛犬ベガ。
彼女に対する後悔の念や彼女を失った淋しさで胸が張り裂けそうになっていた私を、一編の詩が救ってくれました。
この詩はアメリカに古くから伝わる詩で、動物を愛する人々の間でネットを通して世界中に広まったそうです。
いつか虹の橋で彼女に出会えたら、いっぱい謝って、いっぱい感謝して、胸のうちの思いを全て彼女に伝えたい・・・。
虹の橋
天国の少し手前・・・ちょうどその辺りに、「虹の橋」と呼ばれる場所があります。
この世の誰かと愛しあっていた動物たちは、
死んでしまうと「虹の橋」へ行きます。
そこには草原や丘が広がり、彼らは一緒に走り回って遊びます。
いっぱいの食べ物や水、そして降りそそぐ陽射し、
彼らは、楽しく、心地よく、毎日を過ごしています。
ここに来ると、病気だった子も年老いた子も、みんな健康で元気になり、
傷を負った子も、からだが不自由だった子も、再び丈夫になります。
私達が夢の中で見る、懐かしいあの頃の彼らのように。
彼らはとても幸せで満ち足りています。ただひとつのことを除いては・・・。
それは・・・
あとに残してきてしまった特別な人がここにいないことを
みんな寂しく思っているのです。
彼らはみんな、一緒に走り回って遊んでいます。
でも、ある日その中の１匹が、突然足を止めて遠くを見つめます。
そのきらきら輝く瞳はある一点を見つめ、からだは喜びに震え始めます。
次の瞬間、彼はみんなから離れ、
突然、緑の草の上を飛ぶように駆け出します。
速く、速く、そしてどんどん速く。
そう、彼はあなたを見つけたのです。
あなたと親愛なる彼はついに出会い、再会の喜びに固く固く抱き合います。
もうこれで、二度と別れることはないのです。
幸福のキスがあなたの顔に降りそそぎ、
あなたの両手は最愛の彼の頭を優しく撫でます。
そしてあなたは、あなたを信頼しきったその澄んだ瞳をのぞき込みます。
長い間、あなたの前から消えていたけれど、
決して心からは消えることのなかったその瞳を。
それからあなたたちは、一緒に「虹の橋」を渡っていくのです・・・。

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here,
that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends
so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and
our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor;
those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing:
they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.
They all run and play together,
but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver.
Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head,
and you look once more into those trusting eyes,
so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...
